What to wear for family photos

What you and your family wear for your portraits is just as important as the location, lighting and posing in the photograph! Clothes that stand out too much and don’t blend in can detract from a great photo. Outfits can change depending on the location, and time of year, but here are a few constants that will make your portraits unforgettable!

  • Wear solid colored clothing, patterns are distracting when looking at the portrait
  • Choose muted, neutral colors that will blend in well
  • Choose similar tones to wear on top and on bottom
  • Choose a few colors (3 is ideal) for your group to center your outfits around. Dark jewel tones, or softer Earth tones work beautifully!
  • Choose a top with sleeves to at least the elbow, and long pants or skirts that reach at least to the knee. This gives a tailored and elegant look!
  • Keep any jewelry minimal and simple as to not draw too much attention away from your face.
  • Keep your hair and makeup natural as you would wear it normally. We don’t want you looking like someone you don’t recognize in your portraits!

These suggestions will help you and your family to have a great portrait session that you can enjoy the results of for years to come!
