How to choose a frame for a family portrait
How to choose a picture frame by Kincannon Photography.
Tip 1: Start with your photograph when choosing a picture frame
When choosing a frame, decide on which photograph you want framed. This will help determine the color, and style of the frame you choose. Also, is this a canvas print, a gallery wrapped canvas, or a print? That will help you decide if you need a simple frame, more elegant frame, or a floater frame.
A few of our preferences at Kincannon Photography are:
- Double frames look best with a canvas portrait.
- Floater frames and extra deep frames are best for gallery wrapped canvases.
- Painted portraits often look best with an ornate frame.
Tip 2: Decide which room you’ll hang your framed portrait when choosing a picture frame.
At Kincannon Photography, we can take a photograph of the rooms in your home, and show you exactly how your framed pieces will look on the walls in your home. If you haven’t had your portraits taken with us, here’s another tip. Be sure that the style of the frame goes with the style of the room you plan on hanging your family portrait. A couple different styles may include: modern, contemporary, etc)
Tip 3: Think about whether or not you prefer a picture mat for your portrait.
Mat’s are often used to proportion a photograph, but also serve as a dual purpose by means of protecting the print from touch the glass. You can see why that’s a bad thing in our blog post on photos sticking to glass.
If you opt to have a picture mat, you’ll want to ensure that it can fit in your picture frame along with your photograph.
Tip 4: Durability when you choose a picture frame
You’ll want to make sure that you invest in a durable frame. This will increase the chances that your artwork will be protected shall if fall off the wall for any reason.
Additional advice:
Plastic frames are a lot lighter and not as durable as a solid wood frame. For all professional portraits, we recommend an ornate frame or solid wood frame.
