Shot List for Wedding Day

We all know that even with the best of intentions, the schedule of a wedding day can run often run behind schedule. Here’s a quick and easy way to cut down some time. Create a shot list for the portrait hour during the wedding day.

At Kincannon Photography we receive a variety of different shot lists. There’s no right or wrong way to create a shot list, but here’s what we’ve seen, and here’s our recommendation.

The most popular shot lists we’re given is either:

  • A shot list of the bride with individual/group members of her side of the family and the groom with individual/group shots of his side of the family. This often takes more time.
  • A shot list of the bride and groom with groups of their families (bride and groom with groom’s parents, bride and groom with bride’s parents) etc, as a way shortening the portrait time with family.

Our recommendation when it comes to shot lists and the “portrait hour”

  • With each shot you request during your portrait grouping, we recommend allotting 2-3 minutes per shot for us to pose and photograph. – This is assuming everyone is present and accounted for during the portrait session.
    • Set aside at least 60 minutes before sunset for just photographs of you and your significant other.

SUGGESTED PORTRAITS

Because we know that after a wedding ceremony, most brides and groom’s don’t want to stand there for an hour taking portraits with each individual family member.

Here are the most-requested, most-printed, desirable portrait shots:

  • Bride with her bridesmaids (individual & group)
  • Groom with his groomsmen (individual & group)
  • Bride and Groom with Full Wedding Party (including flower girls and ring barriers, etc)
  • Bride and Groom with Bridesmaids & Groomsmen
  • Bride and Groom with Bride’s Immediate Family (Parents & Siblings)
  • Bride and Groom with Groom’s Immediate Family (Parents & Siblings)
  • Bride and Groom with Bride’s Extended Family (Parents, Siblings, & Grandparents)
  • Bride and Groom with Groom’s Extended Family (Parents, Siblings, & Grandparents)
  • Bride and Groom with Groom’s Super-Extended Family (Parents, Siblings, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, & Cousins)
  • Bride and Groom with Bride’s Super-Extended Family (Parents, Siblings, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, & Cousins)
  • Bride and Groom and Immediate Family of both sides (Parents and Siblings)

By going with the suggested and most ordered portraits, you’ll alleviate the stress of standing around for an additional 20-30 minutes trying to get individuals with each family member.

*The benefit in sending your photographer your portrait shot list?

The wedding day can get crazy, and extended family members often have specific requests or shots that THEY want us photographers to capture. While we’d love to capture every single person’s request, it’s just not doable in such a short amount of time. This is why we want to hear the shots YOU the Bride and Groom desire and make those the priority for the portrait hour. Once you give us your list, we take care of the rest and you don’t have to worry about family and friends requesting shots that you really don’t care to have. This shot list is just our guide of what YOU want. The list you give your photographer is our reference point and YOUR voice on the wedding day.
